The Olympic Games

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ll be well aware that the 2016 Olympic Games are under way in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This truly global event brings together competitors from 206 nations, as well as an additional team consisting of refugees. The party gets started with the opening ceremony and the games themselves showcase the very best in sporting achievements across 306 events in 28 different sports.

As event planners ourselves, it is the Olympic Games opening ceremony event that we love the most.

We watched in amazement and considered the work that must have gone on behind the scenes to make the evening a success. As party planners, we are often involved in wonderful exclusive events but the sheer scale of the performances, decorations, and coordination was fascinating to see.

We joked on our Facebook page that we expected a Rio Carnival vibe and that some of our table centres would have fitted in perfectly. In reality there was a much more serious tone to the event, with sustainability and community spirit the continuing theme throughout.

For the London 2012 Olympics opening extravaganza we saw HRH Queen Elizabeth II parachute into the stadium with a little help from 007 agent, James Bond. The theme for the party in Rio concentrated more on making the best from limited resources, but what it lacked in showbiz cameos, more than made up for with passion, colour, and that unmistakeable Brazilian rhythm.
