Breaking the glass is often considered a highlight at a Jewish wedding. It’s certainly one of the more popular symbolic acts of a Jewish wedding ceremony. The serious mood of the ceremony is lifted when the Groom (or both Bride & Groom) stomp on, and breaks a glass.
Mazel Tov!
It’s time for the party to begin! But what does the breaking of the glass mean at a Jewish wedding?
– One common explanation is that the breaking of a glass represents the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem
– The stomping on the glass is also said to represent all that is broken in society, or a reminder that every marriage will go through good and bad times
– Another slightly different explanation is that the broken glass at a Jewish wedding represents the fact that the married couple, just like the broken glass, enter a state from which they can never return
